New to Representative Basketball?
If you’re considering representative basketball for the first time, our Magic Academy – Prep for Reps program is the perfect place to start.
Running throughout Term 3, Prep for Reps has been specifically designed to help players prepare for the Blue Mountains Magic trial process. Players will experience representative-style coaching, develop their basketball IQ, build confidence and gain an understanding of the expectations of representative basketball.
While participation in Prep for Reps is not required to attend trials, it’s a fantastic opportunity to get ahead start and build confidence before selections begin.
Before You Attend
Please help us make the trial process run smoothly by following these simple guidelines. Players must:
- Register online before attending*.
- Attend both trial sessions wherever possible.
- Arrive at least 15 minutes before their scheduled trial time.
- Wear suitable basketball clothing and basketball footwear. A reversable singlet is ideal.
- Current Blue Mountains Magic players must not wear Magic playing uniforms, warm-up tops or other representative apparel to trials. Please wear neutral basketball clothing so all players can be assessed equally.

Players participating in Prep for Reps will receive a discount code to be used when completing their trial registration. The discount code must be entered during the registration process to receive free entry.
Selection Process | The Summit Framework
Selection is guided by the BMBA Summit Framework — a holistic athlete development model that recognises representative basketball is about much more than current ability.
Our coaches assess players across seven key pillars that form the foundation of a successful athlete. These pillars are grouped into three stages of development:
-
The Base – The Person
Great athletes are built on great character. Before we evaluate basketball ability, we look for players who demonstrate the values and behaviours that contribute to a positive team environment. Our coaches assess: Coachability & Character – A positive attitude, willingness to learn and a team-first mindset. Communication – The ability to communicate effectively, encourage teammates and contribute positively on and off the court.
-
The Climb – The Athlete
Basketball is played with effort, determination and resilience. We value players who compete hard, embrace physicality and consistently give their best regardless of the score. Our coaches assess: Competitiveness & Physicality – Effort, resilience, defensive intensity and a relentless desire to improve.
-
The Peak – The Player
Technical skills remain an important part of representative basketball, but they are only one piece of the puzzle. Our coaches assess: Shooting & Finishing, 1-on-1 Defence, 1-on-1 Offence & Decision Making. These basketball-specific skills help us identify a player's current strengths while also considering their long-term development potential.
Our aim is to provide every player with the opportunity to develop in an environment that best supports their growth.
Successful players will receive an invitation to join the 2027 Blue Mountains Magic Representative Program.
Selection Outcomes | More Than Just Making the Team
We recognise that every player’s development journey is different. Depending on trial numbers and the depth of talent within an age group, we may choose to select an extended training squad following the trial process.
As the pre-season progresses, players may be invited into one of three groups:
-
Representative Squad
Players selected in the final representative squad will train and compete throughout the Western Junior League season as official members of the Blue Mountains Magic team.
-
Reserve Players
Reserve players remain an important part of the representative program. They train alongside the squad and may be called upon to play throughout the season to cover injuries, illness or player unavailability. Being selected as a reserve recognises that a player has demonstrated the ability to compete at representative level and ensures they remain ready should an opportunity arise.
-
Development Players
Development Players are identified as athletes with strong potential who would benefit from training within the representative environment. They attend team training sessions, participate in team activities and continue developing alongside the squad under the guidance of our coaching staff. While Development Players are not eligible to play in Western Junior League games, they remain an important part of the program and are often well placed for future representative opportunities.
Our representative program is about more than selecting a team for one season. It’s about developing players for the future.
By offering opportunities as Representative Squad members, Reserves and Development Players, we can support more young athletes on their basketball journey, provide quality coaching to a broader group of players and continue building a strong future for Blue Mountains Magic.
