We believe great coaching does more than build players – it builds people. Our coaching approach focuses on:
– Skill development at all levels
– Identifying and nurturing talent

We want every player to feel valued, learn something new, and leave the court smiling.
– Development programs – Coaches are paid for these structured sessions run by the association.
– Team coaches – Volunteer positions (though teams may arrange private agreements with their coaches).
Either way, you’ll be making a real difference in the lives of local young athletes.
This framework outlines how the Blue Mountains Basketball Association (BMBA) categorises coaches engaged across our programs. A coach’s classification is determined by their capability, independence on the floor and on-court performance, rather than age or the specific session they are running.
Coaching Pathway & Levels

Progression through the coaching levels is earned through demonstrated capability and continuous development and a coach will only move up when they consistently demonstrate the expectations of the higher classification. It is not an automatic process tied to a coach’s age, their length of service, the number of sessions they have worked or the completion of a qualification alone.
To manage this, the Development Officer conducts regular on-court assessments during Aussie Hoops, holiday clinics and other grassroots programs to evaluate practical skill sets.
During these assessments, coaches must actively demonstrate their ability to teach core elements of basketball, alongside strong group management and clear on-court communication.
Coaches will be evaluated on their capacity to run engaging, age-appropriate activities, their ability to adapt drills for varying skill levels and their overall professional presence on the floor.
We want to make coach development and upskilling as simple and accessible as possible for our coaching team. All official coach education and accreditation courses are available through Basketball Australia’s eTrainu platform.

Introduction to Coaching: The foundational starting point for all new coaches.

Ford Aussie Hoops Coach Course: A comprehensive one-hour module providing essential strategies for managing and engaging our youngest grassroots players.

Participation Coach Course: The mandatory online accreditation required to hold a coaching classification at BMBA.

Recommended & Advanced Courses
Competition Coach Course: Required for coaches looking to progress to the Lead Coach or Senior Coach classifications to independently lead programs or representative squads.

Working with Children Check (WWCC)
The safety and wellbeing of our junior players is a priority at Blue Mountains Basketball. Coaches aged 18 and over who undertake child-related work are required to hold a valid NSW Working with Children Check (WWCC).
Volunteer Working with Children Checks are free and can be applied for through Service NSW.
