Rising Stars & All Stars 3x3 | The next Chapter in Our Development Pathway

For Term 3, our new Rising Stars & All Stars 3×3 competition will take the place of the Aussie Hoops Academy as we continue to evolve our Development Pathway.

This is not the end of the Academy program, but rather the next step in its evolution. Throughout Term 3, we’ll be trialling an exciting new competition format that gives players more opportunities to apply their skills in game situations while we work towards reintroducing a dedicated U12 5×5 Saturday competition in Term 4.

3×3 basketball is recognised around the world as one of the best formats for developing young players. With fewer players on the court and more involvement in every possession, players enjoy more touches of the ball, make more decisions and build confidence faster than in traditional formats.

Rising Stars & All Stars 3×3 is designed to help every player take the next step in their basketball journey.

What is 3x3 Basketball?

3×3 is a modified version of basketball played with three players on the court and one substitute, using a single basket.

Recognised by FIBA as an official Olympic discipline, 3×3 has become one of the fastest-growing forms of basketball around the world.

The smaller teams and quicker style of play mean every player is constantly involved in the action.

Players enjoy:

For developing players, that means more learning in every game.

How the Competition Works

Players register individually and are placed into balanced teams of four players.

Each team stays together throughout the term, creating a genuine team environment while allowing players to build friendships and develop together.

Across the eight-week season:

Our focus is on development, participation and enjoyment, while still giving players the excitement of playing in a real competition.

Term 3 sessions commence on Saturday 1st August 2026 from 10am.

Looking ahead, our vision is to continue growing the pathway by retaining 3×3 as the ideal development format for our Rising Stars players while reintroducing a U12 5×5 Saturday competition in Term 4.

How 3x3 is Different from Traditional 5v5 Basketball

This YouTube video provides a great overview of the main 3×3 rules with demonstrations and examples.

3×3 is a fun, fast-paced version of basketball that’s growing quickly around the world. While it uses the same core skills of dribbling, passing, shooting and defending, there are some key differences you should know. We play the official FIBA 3×3 rules with some slight modifications which are outlined below.

Basic Format

   – 3 players on court per team (plus one substitute)

   – Played on a half court with one hoop

   – Games last 10 minutes or end when one team reaches 21 points

Fast-Paced Play

   – After a made basket or rebound, teams “clear” the ball past the 3-point line and continue play

   – The game is continuous — no stops after scoring

   – All dead balls restart with a check ball at the top of the key

Scoring

   – 1 point for baskets inside the arc

   – 2 points for shots beyond the arc (what’s a 3-pointer in 5v5)

   – First to 21 or the leader after 10 minutes wins

Fouls

   – Team fouls only — at 7 fouls, the other team gets 2 free throws

   – At 10+ fouls, it’s 2 free throws plus possession

   – No individual foul-outs, but referees still manage rough play

BMBA Modified Rules

   –  Coaches will be permitted to actively participate in games and may be present on the sideline

   – There will be no 12 second shot clock, however the referee may give a 5 second count if at their absolute discretion, the offensive team is stalling or failing to play actively.

   – We will use standard size 5 basketballs
