Our Purpose

Our Mission

The Blue Mountains Basketball Association’s (BMBA) mission is to provide a community-focused program that promotes health, fitness, and social development through the positive experience of basketball. We welcome players of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.

As a non-profit organisation, we are committed to instilling the values of teamwork, respect, sportsmanship, and discipline in all our members. Our programs are designed to develop players’ basketball skills while encouraging personal growth and well-being.

We believe in the power of sport to inspire and guide. Our leaders, coaches, and programs act as role models, offering mentorship and exposing our members to the lifelong benefits of basketball—including health, improved interpersonal skills, and even potential career pathways.

Our History

With a proud legacy spanning over 60 years, the Blue Mountains Basketball Association (BMBA) has played a central role in developing basketball in the Upper Blue Mountains.

Our journey began in 1961 when Fred and Brenda Pateman established the Association and organised games at Katoomba High School. As basketball grew in popularity, the need for better facilities became evident. In the early 1980s, Fred and Brenda played a key role in fundraising efforts that led to the construction of a new indoor basketball court—built on the site that remains our home today, the Katoomba Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Fred and Brenda remained actively involved for decades, supporting new generations of players through coaching, refereeing, and mentoring. Their dedication was recognised in the 1980s when they became the first life members of BMBA. In 2003, the Blue Mountains City Council formally named the Katoomba Basketball Courts “The Fred and Brenda Pateman Courts” in honour of their contributions to both basketball and the wider Blue Mountains community.

Though both Fred and Brenda have since passed, their generosity, sportsmanship, and unwavering commitment have left a lasting legacy and their influence continues to inspire all those who step onto their courts.

Today, BMBA stands as a testament to the passion and dedication of the local basketball community. From its humble beginnings in a small gym to a thriving organisation, the Association has flourished thanks to the efforts of countless players, coaches, volunteers, and supporters who have helped shape its success.

Our Logo

Our identity has always evolved through our logo, reflecting the growth and modernisation of the sport in our community.

pre 1990’s: Our earliest logo featured a bold, circular design with a simple, two-tone depiction of the iconic Three Sisters rock formation. This classic emblem represented our deep connection to the Blue Mountains region and established a recognisable identity for the association.

c. 2000-2024: As BMBA expanded, so did our branding. The redesigned logo introduced dynamic elements, including a vibrant basketball player in motion and a bold sunburst background. These additions symbolised the energy, passion, and growing competitiveness of basketball in the region while maintaining the Three Sisters as a tribute to our roots.

Today: Our latest logo, launched in 2025, blends tradition with a modern, professional aesthetic. The Three Sisters remain central but are now integrated with a stylised basketball, emphasizing our commitment to the sport. The sharp typography and bold color scheme highlight our strength and vision for the future.

Through each evolution, our logo has reflected the heart of Blue Mountains basketball—honoring our past while looking ahead to an exciting future on the court.

Our Strategy

In 2022, a new committee was formed with a strong mandate to revitalise basketball in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The impact of the lockdowns was significant, but our recovery has been rapid and robust. Key highlights of our resurgence include the expansion of both our junior and senior leagues, the re-establishment of our Blue Mountains Magic representative teams, and the growth of our rep ready program ‘Magic Academy’ and Learn to Play junior development programs.

We are also committed to expanding the reach of basketball in our community through a regular program of school holiday clinics and in-school coaching sessions, with a focus on engaging new female players and First Nations youth.

Looking ahead, our strategy includes:

  • Expanding our representative teams into additional age groups to create a clear development pathway for our most talented players.
  • Partnering with local schools to introduce basketball to more young people and build a strong, sustainable player base.
  • Collaborating with the Council, local schools and the private sector to upgrade and expand our basketball facilities to support continued growth.
