3x3
U12 Girls

Due to low player numbers, we’re unable to run a full U12 girls-only 5v5 competition in Winter 2025 — but we’re excited to offer a fresh alternative that keeps the girls playing and developing their skills: 3×3 basketball!

3×3 is a fast, fun, and simplified version of basketball that’s growing rapidly across Australia and the world. It’s now played at the Olympics and is recognised as a great way for young players to improve their skills, get more involved in the game, and build confidence — all in a supportive, engaging environment.

We’re running a two-week trial to introduce this format to our U12 girls and see if there’s enough interest to form a proper league. It’s a great opportunity for girls to keep playing, try something new, and have fun with their friends — whether they’re beginners or already playing rep or domestic basketball.

Here’s everything you need to know:

When and Where

   – Trial Dates: Saturday 3rd & 10th May

   – Time: 9am

   – Venue: Katoomba Sports & Aquatic Centre

Registration & Cost

   – The trial is free of charge for all U12 girls.

   – No formal registration is required — just complete the form at the bottom of this page to let us know your daughter is attending, so we can plan teams and numbers.

   – If we proceed with a full 3×3 competition:

        – Game fees will be $120 per player for the season (plus annual registration if not already paid).

        – Girls playing both 5v5 and 3×3 will receive a 50% discount on 3×3 game fees.

What to Expect During the Trial

   – Players will be rotated into different teams each week

   – Sessions will be run by Brendan, who’ll guide the players and explain the format

   – The focus is on fun, learning, and confidence-building

What Happens After the Trial?

If we have at least 12 committed players by the end of the trial, we’ll launch a girls-only 3×3 league for the remainder of Winter (approx. 12 weeks + finals)

   – Trial games will be used as grading for us to form balanced teams

   – Full league info, including game schedule and fees, will be shared after the trial ends

Why 3x3 is Great for Development

   – More ball touches and space = more decisions, faster learning

   – Boosts confidence, creativity, and teamwork

   – Ideal for both beginners and experienced players

   – Fun and engaging format that keeps kids active and involved

How 3x3 is Different from Traditional 5v5 Basketball

3×3 is a fun, fast-paced version of basketball that’s growing quickly around the world. While it uses the same core skills of dribbling, passing, shooting and defending, there are some key differences you should know. We play the official FIBA 3×3 rules with some slight modifications which are outlined below.

Basic Format

   – 3 players on court per team (plus one substitute)

   – Played on a half court with one hoop

   – Games last 15 minutes or end when one team reaches 21 points

Fast-Paced Play

   – After a made basket or rebound, teams “clear” the ball past the 3-point line and continue play

   – The game is continuous — no stops after scoring

   – All dead balls restart with a check ball at the top of the key

Scoring

   – 1 point for baskets inside the arc

   – 2 points for shots beyond the arc (what’s a 3-pointer in 5v5)

   – First to 21 or the leader after 15 minutes wins

Fouls

   – Team fouls only — at 7 fouls, the other team gets 2 free throws

   – At 10+ fouls, it’s 2 free throws plus possession

   – No individual foul-outs, but referees still manage rough play

BMBA Modified Rules

   –  Coaches will be permitted to actively participate in games and may be present on the sideline

   – All games will be 15 minutes in length.

   – There will be no 12 second shot clock, however the referee may give a 5 second count if at their absolute discretion, the offensive team is stalling or failing to play actively.

   – We will use standard size 5 basketballs

Want to keep playing Traditional 5v5 Basketball?

We’ve entered two girls teams into the U12 boys 5v5 competition.

🏀 These teams will predominantly be made up of girls who played representative basketball in 2025, but they’re keen to welcome non-rep players who want to join in!

👉 If your daughter would like to join one of these teams, please contact us.

We’re encouraging girls who want more court time to play in both the 3×3 and 5v5 competition — and we’re offering a 50% discount on 3×3 fees for any players doing both.
